The Government of Canada is committed to improving road safety in order to keep all Canadian road users safe. Commercial driver fatigue is a long-standing road safety issue, and that’s why the Government is taking new measures to address the issue. This new requirement will come into force on June 12, 2021, and will replace paper-based daily log books.
Electronic logging devices are tamper-resistant devices that are integrated into commercial vehicle engines. They are intended to ensure that commercial drivers drive within their daily limit and accurately log their working hours. The devices track both when and how long drivers have been at the wheel and ensure they are complying with the government’s Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations.
Use of the devices also reduces administrative burdens, such as eliminating the need for daily paper logs and the time enforcement officers need to verify regulatory compliance.
